Overview of textile and apparel trade in major countries and regions in 2020

In 2020, affected by the new crown pneumonia virus epidemic, masks, protective clothing and other epidemic prevention materials, international trade is more active, clothing and other consumer goods trade scale is significantly reduced. Relying on the advantages of the complete industrial chain, China's textile industry export competitiveness is steadily released, South Asia, Southeast Asia and other countries have reduced the scale of exports of textiles and clothing.


Developed economies end consumption downturn, China's share of the market share remains stable


Major developed economies masks imports increased significantly, leading to a significant expansion in the scale of textile imports, clothing imports have decreased. 2020, the EU, Japan, respectively, from the global imports of masks 20.62 billion euros (about 24.6 billion U.S. dollars), 518.73 billion yen (about 4.75 billion U.S. dollars), respectively, accounting for 48.1% of textile imports in the same period, 41.7%, pulling the EU and Japan's imports of textiles from the global amount of 61.1%, 31.5% year-on-year growth, respectively. The U.S. imported $8.56 billion of masks, accounting for 25.1% of textile imports in the same period, while imports of textiles other than masks decreased by 6.6% year-on-year (the U.S. did not announce the amount of masks imported in 2019, and the growth rate of all textile imports, including masks, could not be calculated).

The epidemic has had a substantial impact on employment and income of residents in developed economies, coupled with the impact of changing consumer scenarios such as home isolation and reduced social activities, resulting in sluggish sales of non-essential end consumer goods such as apparel. The retail sales of apparel and clothing in the U.S., Europe and Japan fell to a historical low in April 2020 and have since recovered gradually, but the fall and winter epidemic has again impacted the retail market, and the annual retail sales decline is still large. 2020, the cumulative retail sales of apparel and clothing in the U.S. was $197.35 billion, down 26% year-on-year; the retail sales of textiles, apparel and clothing in Japan were approximately $79.3 billion, down 21.4% year-on-year 21.4%; EU textiles, clothing and apparel, footwear retail sales decreased by 24.4% year-on-year. The scale of apparel imports also declined in 2020, with the U.S., EU and Japanese apparel imports decreasing by 23.5%, 13.5% and 15% year-on-year, respectively.

In the overall stable situation of domestic epidemic prevention and control, China's competitive advantage of a complete textile industry system has come to the fore, becoming the only economy among major textile and apparel producers in Asia to achieve positive export growth and a corresponding increase in its share of the international market. China Customs Express data show that in 2020, China exported a total of $ 291.22 billion in textiles and clothing, an increase of 9.6%. According to the relevant statistics of the United States, Europe and Japan, the proportion of China's total textile and apparel imports in the United States, the European Union and Japan in 2020 was 33%, 43.9% and 58.6%, respectively, an increase of 0.2, 13.1 and 3.3 percentage points over 2019. Among them, China's mask products occupy an absolute advantage, accounting for 83%, 91.3% and 89.9% of the imports of masks in the United States, the European Union and Japan, respectively.

Textile and apparel exports from other developing economies generally shrink in size


In 2020, the major textile and apparel producing countries in South and Southeast Asia all experienced different degrees of shrinkage in export scale. Relevant statistics show that Bangladesh, Vietnam and Indonesia exported $29.71 billion, $33.55 billion and $5.86 billion of textile and apparel to the world in 2020, respectively, with exports decreasing by 11.8%, 9.3% and 17.2% year-on-year, respectively. India has exported $21.67 billion of textile and apparel in FY 2020 ~ 2021 (April 2020 ~ January 2021 data), down 19.3% year-on-year. In terms of product mix, from the available data, the above four countries' textile exports are generally better than apparel, but only Bangladesh's textile exports have achieved a positive growth of 21.6%. The remaining three countries have different degrees of decline in textile exports, but clothing exports fell more significantly than textiles, India and Bangladesh clothing exports fell 26.4% and 12.7% year-on-year, respectively, the decline was higher than the textile 13.6 and 34.3 percentage points.


Turkey is also among the world's top ten countries in terms of textile and apparel exports, exporting a total of $27.08 billion of textiles and apparel in 2020, down 3.9% year-on-year, with textile exports down 0.7% year-on-year and apparel exports down 6.3% year-on-year.
